Travel Photography Competition – week 23

Hello travellers and photographers around the world and welcome to our first Travel Photography Competition in the new 2013 year! This week we’re reviewing photos published on our Facebook page between 25th November and 2nd December 2012.

If you are new to our website, we run a weekly Travel Photography Competition in which we encourage you to send us your best travel shots (landscapes, people you meet on the road, you travelling) and inspire us and our readers to travel further. The three pictures with the biggest amount of “likes” on our Facebook page will be published on our website.

Simple! If you want to participate as well, simply visit our Travel Photography page to learn more about the competition and see all the previous winning photos.

Everyone ready? Let’s start!

We will start this week’s selection with this wonderful photo of an old door in Essaouira, Morocco. Essaouira is a city in the western Morocco on the Atlantic coast. In the early 16th century the Portuguese seized 6 towns on the Moroccan Atlantic coast and built 6 stand-alone fortresses. Since then, the city has also been known by its Portuguese name of Mogador or Mogadore. The walled centre of town, the Medina, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an example of a late 18th century fortified town.

Sounds like an interesting place, most definitely. If you’re planning to visit Morocco, read our guest post “Humbled on the Road” sent by Ewelina Lucy who has hitch-hiked across Morocco.

This beautiful photo was sent by Susan Huckaby Parsons. If you’d like to see more of her works, check out her popular Facebook page Reimagining Photography.

The second winning photo this week was taken in Storesand on Kirkøy island, Norway. It’s a popular excursion place due to its stunning views and bathing sites which border a protected coastal pine forest of the Hvaler National Park.

This stunning serene photo was taken by Patrick Pedersen, a Fine Art Landscape Photographer. If you like this photo, you will also like his other shots – visit his Facebook page for more!

And the last great shot this week was taken in in Cappadocia, Turkey.

Whether you come to Turkey as a participant of a package tour or as an independent backpacker or hitch-hiker, Cappadocia is the place to go for its natural beauty. This breathtaking volcanic landscape, which is unique for its rock formations, lies on 1000m high plateau in Eastern Anatolia.

You should definitely come here also if you are a history buff, for this region contains several underground cities, tunnels and temples, where early Byzantine Christians used to hide from Persian and Arabic invaders in the 6th and 7th centuries.

The main city in this area is Nevşehir. The best towns to stay is are: Göreme (with its National Park, added to the UNESCO Worl Heritage list) and Ürgüp.

This great shot was taken while on a hot air balloon by Julie Yamaner, based in Israel.
