Travel Photography Competition – week 48

Hello everyone and welcome to the 48th edition of our popular Travel Photography Competition. This week we are reviewing photos published on our Facebook page between 9th and 16th June.

We’ve had a bit of a break recently as we’ve just started our Balkan Peninsula by Thumb trip and didn’t have access to the Internet at all times, but we are back now!

The first winner in this week’s competition shows a Ghanaian dancer and was taken in Bantuma village, Ghana.

Ghana which translates as Warrior King, was the home to a number of ancient predominantly Akan kingdoms before the European colonial powers moved in. It finally regained its independence from Britain in 1957, becoming the first African nation to do so.

The second winning shot this week comes all the way from the Gulf Lake in Marcellus, Michigan, USA. Marcellus, which was established in 1832, became an official village in 1879 with over 500 people.

And the last photo in this week’s selection was taken at picturesque Goðafoss, Iceland. Goðafoss is one of the most stunning waterfalls on the island with a height of 12 metres and a width of 30 metres. After the Christianisation of Iceland, it is written, perhaps apocryphally, that the King Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall.
