Travel Photography Competition – week 61

Hello everyone and welcome to the 61st edition of our popular Travel Photography Competition! This week we will be looking at photos sent into our Facebook page between 21st and 28th September.

This weekend we have a record number of winning photos: 6! Congratulations to everyone and we hope your pictures will inspire others to travel further! Remember that “the world is a book, and those who don’t travel only read one page” (St. Augustine was a wise man and we certainly agree!).

In first position we have 3 photos this week! The first of them shows star trails in the Badlands National Park in South Dakota, USA. As the Park’s official website says: “The rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds.”. The park is open all year round apart from the main public holidays. There are 2 designated camp-sites and cabins. It looks like a perfect place for hiking among prairie grasses and unique geologic formations.

This great shot was sent by WiredNomads. They have disclosed that it took 300 photos to compose this wonderful image! Jordan and Cait are an interesting couple of travellers and we highly recommend checking out their website, not only if you are into photography but first and foremost if you love adventure blogs.

Also in first position, with the same number of votes, we have this great picture of Glenabo Noreen woodland near Fermoy, Ireland. Fermoy is a town on the River Blackwater in County Cork, inhabited by around 5,800 people. The Blackwater river is one of the town’s major attractions and is very popular for its salmon fishing.

And the last, but by no means least, photo located in first position, was taken in Maltatal, Austria. The Maltatal is a valley of the Malta River embedded within the Hohe Tauern mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps. It is known for its numerous waterfalls which emerge during the snow melting season, therefore it is also called the ‘Valley of Falling Waters’. In the valley there is an 18 km long scenic route with copious serpentines that lead up to the dam perched on an altitude of 1,933 m.

Jan Passchier - near The Maltatal, Austria
This beautiful picture was sent by Jan Passchier from Amsterdam. Check out Jan’s Flickr Photostream and his website where you can find tons of stunning and well-taken photos of nature and dogs, Jan’s passion.

In second position we have only one photo – this lovely colourful shot of a canoe seen in the Stepping Stones Park on Long Island, New York, USA. Long Island is an island stretching north-eastwards from New York Harbour into the Atlantic Ocean and it contains four counties, two of which (Brooklyn and Queens) are boroughs of New York City, and the other two (Nassau and Suffolk) are classified as suburbs. Long Island is both the largest and the longest island in the contiguous United States.

And finally in third position we are featuring two images this week. The first one was taken in the Lake District, UK. “The Lakes” is a stunning mountainous region in North West England and a popular holiday destination. It’s well-known not only thanks to its lakes, mountains and woods, but also for being beautifully described by the 19th century Lake Poets.

Hodan Pictures - Keswick, the Lake District, UK
This lovely landscape was captured by George Hodan, who has sent us many wonderful shots of the Lake District so far. Visit his Facebook page Hodan Pictures to find many more examples of his talent! And if you’d like to download any of them for free, you can do so directly from his website.

And the last image in this week’s selection shows this smiley woman captured in Guapulo Neighborhood, Quito, Ecuador. Quito is the capital city of Ecuador, and at an elevation of 2,800 meters above sea level, is the highest capital city in the world. It is located in the north-central part of the country, in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the slopes of Pichincha, an active volcano in the Andes. Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centres in the Americas, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

This beautiful image was sent by Lizzy Rainey. Check out her Facebook page Rainey Travels and her blog raineytravels.com, where you can find “tales of moving to new countries & new cities every 8 months, with a serious non-plan and attempts at humor”.
