Toruń

Toruń is one of the oldest Polish cities and I would go even further and say that it’s also one of the most beautiful places in Poland. Not without reason was its old town listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Its cobbled streets, medieval red brick architecture and the smell of ginger bread, as Toruń is Poland’s ginger bread headquarters, give the city an unforgettable air. If you are an architecture buff, you can spend hours just strolling around the old town (which isn’t that big) and never get bored.

Although the first settlements in this area date back to 1100 BC, the first proper city was founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13^th century. The city became part of the Kingdom of Poland in the 15^th century.

Toruń is also the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus (or in Polish: Mikołaj Kopernik), a Polish Renaissance astronomer who first formulated the heliocentric cosmology.
